Do you really believe you can get rich betting on a rise or fall? Why binary options trading was branded Britain's 'biggest investment con' by Which? Published: 07:59 GMT, 5 December 2017 | Updated: 08:41 GMT, 5 December 2017. All investment is risky but some propositions amp up the stakes to levels akin to slot machines in Las Vegas. Binary options are one of these. They allow you to bet that a stock, currency, index, or just about anything that is capable of being measured in financial terms, will move up or down in seconds. In the time it takes to spin a coin, you can win back your money plus a percentage – or lose the whole lot. Viva Las Vegas: binary options amp up the stakes to levels akin to slot machines. They have been labelled as 'the biggest investment con in Britain' by consumer group Which?, while the Financial Conduct Authority warned in November that those who pile their cash into such propositions make a loss more often than not. Investors of binary options are often lured by flashy marketing campaigns often through social media from providers promising eye-watering rates of return. Share this article.
HOW THIS IS MONEY CAN HELP. However, the sad reality is that people typically lose money on them, and the quick-fire nature of these trades leads to uninformed decision making. Investors are offered higher returns for lower probability events and lower returns for higher probability events, so they need to 'beat the odds' on a regular basis to make a profit. This factor, along with the short duration of trades, can cause addictive behaviour typically associated with gambling, according to the City watchdog. The regulator also said those who invest in binary options are at greater risk of falling victim to scam artists than the more mainstream propositions. Such unscrupulous individuals commonly take bets from punters but fail to place them on their behalf, and manipulate software to distort prices and payouts - meaning they could control whether the victim would win or lose. They also commonly refuse to return client funds and break all contact with customers. Around £50million has been reported lost to binary options - £18million of which has been reported in 2017 alone, according to the latest police figures. In the publication of its research, Which? outlines the perils of an unnamed individual who invested and lost the £60,000 and 'dozens' of five-figure bets - each lasting a few seconds. Which? alleges the firm was acting as a bookmaker and such transactions were rigged. Magnum Options, has since been shut down by the Insolvency Service. Another person was charged twice for an initial investment of £10,000 with another binary broker BinaryTilt following a persuasive sales pitch.
After trying to reclaim the money he discovered a £4,200 bonus had been added to his account - forcing him to trade his money many times over before he could withdraw a penny. BinaryTilt failed to respond to This is Money's request for a comment on the matter. A key risk of binary options is the fact they are typically priced in a similar manner to fixed odds bets, according to the . Which? said it was concerned by the terms and conditions of all 10 companies reviewed. It said that many offered initial bonuses that required investors to trade up to 40 times their deposit before they were allowed withdraw cash. What's more, the consumer group claimed that some sites stated that customers would only be allowed to withdraw their profits - effectively banning them from getting their original investment back. 'Shockingly, others had clauses which meant the money in the account was effectively owned by the site and could be used for their day-to-day business operations,' it added. At present, the Gambling Commission has overseen binary options trading but only if the firm has remote gambling equipment in the UK. To check whether a company holds an operating licence from the Gambling Commission, you can search its public register of licensees. From 3 January, 2018 binary options will be regulated in the same way as investment products and will be regulated by the . This means they will be regulated in the same way as vanilla equity and bond investment products, so any individual complaints will be resolved by the Financial Ombudsman Service and consumers will have access to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Should you invest in binary options.
The industry consensus is that binary options should form no part of an investment method - be it long or short term. Some investors might find these products attractive because they essentially only have to guess whether or not something specific will happen. Sounds simple right? But more often than not, it is a case of heads I win, tails you lose for the broker. 'Binary options are a ludicrous, high risk, short-term bet. 'Those who absolutely must play high stakes games would have more fun at William Hill betting on a White Christmas – but don’t bet the ranch,' says Justin Urquhart Stewart, co-founder and head of corporate development at Seven Investment Management. 'And more crucially, don’t confuse it with a sensible long-term investment method. It is horrifying to see that around £50 million has been reported lost to binary options scams. It’s another rallying call for more financial education.' Share or comment on this article.

City watchdog to regulate 'addictive' binary trading after scammers net £60m. T he Financial Conduct Authority is to police firms offering "binary options" following complaints of large losses by consumers and the prevalence of scams.
Binary options trading involves betting on what will happen to the price of a stock, commodity or other asset over a very short time period - in many cases just minutes. Such bets are complex, high-risk, and the majority of consumers who place them lose money, according to the . Until now, those betting on binary options have had no protection from the financial regulator, as the industry was overseen by the Gambling Commission. From January 3, 2018, firms will require authorisation and complaints will be able to be referred to the Financial Ombudsman. Deposits will also be protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme if a binary options company goes bust, although this will not protect consumers from losses they incur by betting on legitimate binary options. For investments, the FSCS protection limit is £50,000 per person, per firm. Aside from most consumers losing money, the 's other concerns include the addictive nature of binary options betting, and inherent conflicts of interest. "In most cases, the firm you are buying from benefits when you lose. This places the firm's interest in direct conflict with yours," it said. T here has also been significant fraud. Since 2012 there have been a reported 2,605 victims who lost a total of £59.4m on binary options scams - an average of nearly £23,000 each. T he scams involve promising high returns for bets that never occur, and using software to manipulate how asset prices and resultant payouts appear to customers. Typically, the company then refuses to return funds and breaks off contact.
These scams are often advertised on social media, and have well designed websites that "appear professional". Binary options companies that are authorised to operate in the European Economic Area (EEA) are currently able to do business in the UK, and will continue to be able to do so. The Commodity Futures Trading CommissionЂ™s (CFTC) Office of Consumer Outreach and the Securities & Exchange CommissionЂ™s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy are issuing this Investor Alert to warn about fraudulent schemes involving binary options and their trading platforms. These schemes allegedly include refusing to credit customer accounts, denying fund reimbursement, identity theft, and manipulation of software to generate losing trades. Binary options differ from more conventional options in significant ways. A binary option is a type of options contract in which the payout will depend entirely on the outcome of a yesno proposition. The yesno proposition typically relates to whether the price of a particular asset that underlies the binary option will rise above or fall below a specified amount. For example, the yesno proposition connected to the binary option might be something as straightforward as whether the stock price of XYZ company will be above $9.36 per share at 2:30 pm on a particular day, or whether the price of silver will be above $33.40 per ounce at 11:17 am on a particular day. Once the option holder acquires a binary option, there is no further decision for the holder to make as to whether or not to exercise the binary option because binary options exercise automatically. Unlike other types of options, a binary option does not give the holder the right to purchase or sell the underlying asset. When the binary option expires, the option holder will receive either a pre-determined amount of cash or nothing at all. Given the all-or-nothing payout structure, binary options are sometimes referred to as Ђњall-or-nothing optionsЂќ or Ђњfixed-return options. Ђќ. Binary Options Trading Platforms.
Some binary options are listed on registered exchanges or traded on a designated contract market that are subject to oversight by United States regulators such as the CFTC or SEC, respectively, but this is only a portion of the binary options market. Much of the binary options market operates through Internet - based trading platforms that are not necessarily complying with applicable U. S. regulatory requirements. The number of Internet-based trading platforms that offer the opportunity to purchase and trade binary options has surged in recent years. The increase in the number of these platforms has resulted in an increase in the number of complaints about fraudulent promotion schemes involving binary options trading platforms. Typically, a binary options Internet-based trading platform will ask a customer to deposit a sum of money to buy a binary option call or put contract. For example, a customer may be asked to pay $50 for a binary option contract that promises a 50% return if the stock price of XYZ Company is above $5 per share when the option expires. If the outcome of the yesno proposition (in this case, that the share price of XYZ Company will be above $5 per share at the specified time) is satisfied and the customer is entitled to receive the promised return, the binary option is said to expire Ђњin the money. Ђќ If, however, the outcome of the yesno proposition is not satisfied, the binary option is said to expire Ђњout of the money, Ђќ and the customer may lose the entire deposited sum. There are variations of binary option contracts in which a binary option that expires out of the money may entitle the customer to receive a refund of some small portion of the depositЂ”for example, 5%Ђ”but that is not typically the case. In fact, some binary options Internet-based trading platforms may overstate the average return on investment by advertising a higher average return on investment than a customer should expect given the payout structure. For instance, in the example above, assuming a 5050 chance of winning, the payout structure has been designed in such a way that the expected return on investment is actually negative , resulting in a net loss to the customer.
This is because the consequence if the option expires out of the money (approximately a 100% loss) significantly outweighs the payout if the option expires in the money (approximately a 50% gain). In other words, in the example above, an investor could expect, on average, to lose money. Investor Complaints Relating to Fraudulent Binary Options Trading Platforms. The CFTC and SEC have received numerous complaints of fraud associated with websites that offer an opportunity to buy or trade binary options through Internet-based trading platforms. The complaints fall into at least three categories: refusal to credit customer accounts or reimburse funds to customers identity theft and manipulation of software to generate losing trades. The first category of alleged fraud involves the refusal of certain Internet-based binary options trading platforms to credit customer accounts or reimburse funds after accepting customer money. These complaints typically involve customers who have deposited money into their binary options trading account and who are then encouraged by ЂњbrokersЂќ over the telephone to deposit additional funds into the customer account. When customers later attempt to withdraw their original deposit or the return they have been promised, the trading platforms allegedly cancel customersЂ™ withdrawal requests, refuse to credit their accounts, or ignore their telephone calls and emails. The second category of alleged fraud involves identity theft. For example, some complaints allege that certain Internet-based binary options trading platforms may be collecting customer information such as credit card and driverЂ™s license data for unspecified uses. If a binary options Internet-based trading platform requests photocopies of your credit card, driverЂ™s license, or other personal data, do not provide the information. The third category of alleged fraud involves the manipulation of the binary options trading software to generate losing trades. These complaints allege that the Internet-based binary options trading platforms manipulate the trading software to distort binary options prices and payouts.
For example, when a customerЂ™s trade is Ђњwinning, Ђќ the countdown to expiration is extended arbitrarily until the trade becomes a loss. Unregistered Transactions, Operations, Broker-Dealers, or Trading Exchanges Illegal Options Transactions. In addition to ongoing fraudulent activity, many binary options trading platforms may be operating in violation of other applicable laws and regulations, including certain registration and regulatory requirements of the CFTC and SEC, as described below. Certain Registration and Regulatory Requirements of the SEC. For example, some binary options may be securities. Under the federal securities laws, a company may not lawfully offer or sell securities unless the offer and sale have been registered with the SEC or an exemption from such registration applies. For example, if the terms of a binary option contract provide for a specified return based on the price of a companyЂ™s securities, the binary option contract is a security and may not be offered or sold without registration, unless an exemption from registration is available. If there is no registration or exemption, then the offer or sale of the binary option to you would be illegal. If any of the products offered by binary options trading platforms are security-based swaps, additional requirements will apply. In addition, some binary options trading platforms may be operating as unregistered broker-dealers . A person who engages in the business of effecting securities transactions for the accounts of others in the U. S. generally must register with the SEC as a broker-dealer. If a binary options trading platform is offering to buy or sell securities, effecting transactions in securities, andor receiving transaction-based compensation (such as commissions), it likely should be registered with the SEC.
to determine whether a particular trading platform is registered with the SEC as a broker-dealer, visit FINRAЂ™s BrokerCheck . Some binary options trading platforms may also be operating as unregistered securities exchanges . This would be the case if they matched orders in securities of multiple buyers and sellers using established non - discretionary methods. However, there are cases where a registered broker-dealer with a trading system or platform may legitimately have no obligation to register as an exchange. Certain Registration and Regulatory Requirements of the CFTC. It is illegal for entities to solicit, accept offers, offer to or enter into commodity options transactions (for example, foreign currencies, metals such as gold and silver, and agricultural products such as wheat or corn) with U. S. citizens, unless those options transactions are conducted on a designated contract market, an exempt board of trade, or a bona fide foreign board of trade, or are conducted with U. S. customers who have a net worth that exceeds $5 million. To see the most recent list of exchanges that are designated as contract markets, check the CFTC website . There currently are only three designated contract markets offering binary options in the U. S.: Cantor Exchange LP Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Inc. and the North American Derivatives Exchange, Inc. All other entities offering binary options that are commodity options transactions are doing so illegally. Further entities that solicit or accept orders for commodity options transactions and accept, among other things, money to margin, guarantee, or secure the commodity options transactions must register as a Futures Commission Merchant. Entities that act as the counterparty (that is, they take the other side of the transaction from the customer as opposed to matching orders) for foreign currency options transactions for customers with a net worth of less than $5 million must register as a Retail Foreign Exchange Dealer.
Because of their lack of compliance with applicable laws, if you purchase binary options offered by persons or entities that are not registered with or subject to the oversight of a U. S. regulator, you may not have the full benefit of the safeguards of the federal securities and commodities laws that have been put in place to protect investors, as some safeguards and remedies are available only in the context of registered offerings. In addition, individual investors may not be able to pursue, on their own, some remedies that are available for unregistered offerings. Ђў RememberЂ”much of the binary options market operates through Internet-based trading platforms that are not necessarily complying with applicable U. S. regulatory requirements and may be engaging in illegal activity. Ђў Do not invest in something that you do not understand. If you cannot explain the investment opportunity in a few words and in an understandable way, you may need to reconsider the potential investment. Ђў Before investing in binary options, you should take the following precautions : 1. Check to see if the binary options trading platform has registered the offer and sale of the product with the SEC. Registration provides investors access to key information about the terms of the product being offered. You can use EDGAR to determine whether an issuer has registered the offer and sale of a particular product with the SEC. 2. Check to see if the binary options trading platform itself is registered as an exchange. To determine whether the platform is registered as an exchange, you can check the SECЂ™s website regarding Exchanges . 3. Check to see if the binary options trading platform is a designated contract market. To determine whether an entity is a designated contract market, you can check the CFTCЂ™s website . Ђў Finally, before investing, use FINRAЂ™s BrokerCheck and the National Futures AssociationЂ™s Background Affiliation Status Information Center (BASIC) to check the registration status and background of any firm or financial professional that you are considering.
If you cannot verify that they are registered, donЂ™t trade with them, donЂ™t give them any money, and donЂ™t share your personal information with them. Personal Finance Review – Jim Fink’s Buying Stocks & Options Trading Training? Personal Finance is a premium subscription-based binary options trade signals service and instruction course that purportedly teaches traders how to make trades at an 85% win rate. What Is Personal Finance? Personal Finance is a service created by Investing Daily, a company that provides free and premium stock trading advice. The creator of Personal Finance is Jim Fink, who is listed as Investing Daily's Director of Portfolio method. Personal Finance Product. Jim Fink claims that following the guidelines and information made available to Personal Finance subscribers can result in making an average of $185 a day by playing the binary options market. Only around nine minutes of work a week is required, Fink adds, saying that the strategies he and the rest of Investing Daily's portfolio staff have developed result in an 84.7% success rate overall. Enrollment in Personal Finance costs $39.95 for one year's worth of access. This provides users with 12 months' worth of Personal Finance reports both electronically and in print to your mailbox, access to the program website with portfolio updates, flash alerts, and member forums.
Subscribers also receive two bonus reports by fink, the Options method Manual and The Biggest legal Loophole in the IRS Tax Code. Subscribers who purchase two years' worth of access at a time for $79 receive all of the above, plus two additional reports: How to Buy Stocks at a Discount and Options method Manual. There are two guarantees offered by Personal Finance: First is a full 90-day no questions asked refund that entitles buyers to receive their entire purchase price if they are not satisfied with the program. Users can also receive the pro-rated cost of their membership if they wish a full refund after the three month mark and before the end of their subscription period. Secondly, Personal Finance guarantees that you will have at least an 85% success rate on your trades during the first 90 days of your membership. If you don't achieve this, you're also entitled to receiving a full refund of the cost of your membership (note this doesn't cover any additional funds you may have lost on bad trades). Personal Finance Opportunity. The opportunity presented here by Fink is seemingly to create a residual revenue stream over the internet by trading binary options using his supposedly highly successful trading strategies. There are no other opportunities besides these, as there is no affiliate or MLM marketing angle to be had in this instance. Personal Finance Verdict. Jim Fink has some rather impressive credentials.
He's a highly successful stock market trader and has been such for many years, and this indicates that he's got more than a few tricks up his sleeve when it comes to navigating the always-volatile and unpredictable binary options market. That being said, we're a little skeptical that he can deliver on his claim that his methods can provide an 85% win margin on binary options trading. This is a very high figure, especially since most investors would be insanely happy with a win rate of anything over 65%. We're not saying that Fink can't do it – we're just saying that we'd like to see some proof of these transactions. The Personal Finance sales page certainly features persuasive prose but seems to be a little light on hard evidence the numbers that Fink throws up certainly look wonderful, but there seems to be little to no verification of these astronomical figures besides some tables and graphs that could easily have been put together by anyone with a novice's knowledge of Photoshop. The claims being made aren't just flimsy – Investing Daily doesn't seem to have much faith in them itself. The so-called “full refund” guarantee really isn't much of a guarantee if you think about it, as the only loss Investing Daily faces is anywhere between $40-$80 per subscriber, which is nothing compared to how someone who make a few bad trades on binary options can be fleeced out of thousands. We recommend approaching Personal Finance with a good dose of skepticism if you're looking to get involved. US Search Desktop. We appreciate your feedback on how to improve Yahoo Search . When even the grandmas on the train discuss something, this means this thing has become a household name. In the past few months we are observing this phenomenon with Bitcoin.
From something obscure that only the computer geeks cared about, the cryptocurrency has become huge and everybody is talking about it. Many people are sorry they did not buy a few bitcoins when they cost just a couple of bucks. Many people have already or are currently investing in it. Some, like the Winklevoss twins, have even become Bitcoin billionaires, but the majority of people are not. Enter the scammers. Usually the Bitcoin is more associated with hacks of bitcoin exchanges and thefts of funds from clients' wallets, but the scammers can be quite inventive when they have to come up with new schemes to rip off people. The latest addition to the list of binary options trading robots scams is the so-called The Bitcoin Code , which actually has absolutely nothing to do with the Bitcoin. In fact, this is a scam, much similar to The Retired Millionaire, McDonald Millionaire, The Daily Profit, The Blazing Speed Trader, etc. The entire scheme is targeting people like the aforementioned grandmas on the train who have absolutely no idea what is this, how it works and does it make any sense. The app reportedly has 99.4% level of accuracy for its predictions and claims to be 0.01 seconds ahead of the markets. Whatever this may mean. It promises ludicrous profits of $550 an hour or $13200 a day, by doing absolutely nothing.
Except giving your hard earned $250 to the scammers, that is. Just imagine all the nice things you can buy with this kind of money. Every day. Or you can save up and become a millionaire in just a few months. Nice, eh? As the old adage goes, if it is too good to be true, it probably is not true. Much like the vast majority of the binary options robot scams, the site contains a promotional video that starts off with happy customers who look and sound quite convincing. But, of course, they are freelancers who are getting paid to say whatever's in the script. We have found the guy with the first testimonial. He is a top-ranking freelancer on the Fiverr platform, that goes by the username banjoman15. Sure enough, there is a banjo in the background of the video testimonial. Banjoman charges low fees, starting from $5 or $10 for his services.
If you want him to wear a dress shirt and a tie for the video, you must pay him an extra $5. He can pretend to be anything you want, including a preacher or a doctor. We did not bother to check the other two happy investors, but the third one made us laugh with his claims how he has been investing for over 20 years, but this trading robot has actually made him rich. A millionaire, in fact. We are not going to delve in much detail on the subject, but we find it very funny that an &ldquoexperienced investor&rdquo had to resort to such desperate measures as giving $250 for an automated trading robot on a dubious binary options site. Then there is the creator of the code &ndash a really generous and very rich man called Steve McKay who used to work as a software developer in a Wall Street company. Whatever. He developed the code at the bidding of his boss who then took it for himself. But Steve, being a smart guy, tried the software and became a millionaire. He was even on the cover of Fortune magazine. It is strange that we could not find this cover anywhere.
So Steve has decided to share his fortune with 25 lucky winners who are getting his ingenious trading app for free. They get to keep the profits. &ldquoSteve&rdquo gets to keep the gullible people's $250. What is the most annoying thing about this video, is that it is figuratively speaking, leading people by the nose. It claims the software invests in bitcoin, when it actually invests in binary options. But they are not being mentioned anywhere and people are led to believe they are investing in bitcoin. For those who want to do that &ndash there are properly regulated forex brokers offering CFDs on bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies. Some of the platforms have automated trading as well. For those who wish to actually buy bitcoin, there are numerous cryptocurrency exchanges who are easy to use. What this scam does, is nothing but funneling the money of gullible people who lack any financial knowledge and culture, into the coffers of the offshore binary options broker OptionStars, based in, of all places, Samoa.
The promotional video employs the same sales tactics as the TV sales spots that offer knives, wonder cures, blenders and magnetic belts. It promises wonders, the voiceover is fast and very convincing and constantly reminds you how lucky you are, how you must act now, without thinking it over, as this is a one-time offer and how they actually don't sell you anything. Of course, everything is perfectly legal and ethical. Well, not exactly. Is not legal, and even less ethical to rip off people. But we are sure many people bought into this scam and gave their money for nothing. Sometimes we can't help but wonder how is it possible that so many foolish people to walk the earth. The Bitcoin Code is a scam. It has absolutely nothing to do with bitcoin or investing in bitcoin, but is merely using the popularity of the cryptocurrency. In fact, this is a scam binary options trading robot that promises unrealistic profits and connects to an unregulated offshore binary options broker &ndash OptionStars.
Our general advise is to avoid investing in binary options at all, as they are very risky and highly speculative and the danger of losing all your assets, even when trading with a regulated broker is fairly high. Dealing with a dubious unregulated broker is even riskier. Grand Capital ( grandcapital. net ) is an award-winning binary options broker, offering trading in most popular assets on the widely used MetaTrader 4 platform under pretty good trading conditions. 24Option is probably the largest and most reputable binary option broker. It is regulated by and all client deposits up to EUR 20 000 are guaranteed by Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). 24Option offers 100% bonus on deposit. Slippage. Price feed.
